Album Review

After releasing several homemade cassettes and CD-Roms in limited batches, Benoit Pioulard's debut EP for Moodgadget, Enge, would feel right at home among the lo-fi acoustic heroes of the '90s and the indie folk heroes of the '00s. Bells, guitar, and an incoherent Pioulard on vocals reminiscing, but not overlong for the days when names like Lou Barlow and Elliott Smith rolled from the lips of every indie rocker from Boston to Bakersfield. Things get a bit more electronic-based with the cut-up vocals à la Telefon Tel Aviv on "Kids Are Getting Younger," but never really stray too far from home base, making Enge easily accessible for those with a phobia about finding electronics in their acoustic albums. For those who missed out on the limited-edition preciousness of Pioulard's other releases, this is a great place to get acquainted with an artist whose promise is just starting to fully bloom.
