Album Review

After one volume focusing on the early cowboy material of Tex Ritter, Living Era turned to his country hits of the '40s and early '50s with High Noon: 1942-1952. A better compilation could hardly have been prepared; even the excellent Bear Family collection, High Noon, barely rises above this disc, though the Bear Family volume does present noticeably better audio quality. All of Ritter's best material is included, beginning, of course, with the title track (the biggest hit of his career), but also ranging to his pair of hard-bitten masterpieces "Blood on the Saddle" and "Rye Whiskey," which put the lie to the idea that all cowboy music was pleasant and jaunty. Sprinkled among the 27 tracks are quite a few interesting additions, like Ritter's primeval versions of the old-timey standards "Froggy Went A-Courtin'" and "Green Grow the Lilacs," his "Rye Whiskey" soundalike "Rock and Rye," or his delightfully ornery anti-love songs "When You Leave, Don't Slam the Door" and "I've Had Enough of Your Two-Timin' (You've Had Enough of My Bankroll)."
