The lack of support from a major label didn't stop drummer Roland Vasquez from becoming a very popular Latin jazz musician since his early days with GRP. The uncontrollable excitement and spontaneous sound of the remastered The Tides of Time—originally released in 1988 on Soundwings—helps explain why. With a few calming exceptions at the end, this funky collection is filled with danceable Latin rhythms. Vasquez is a solid drummer whose fine compositions leave room for ample soloing by an all star group of friends—including guitarist Mike Stern, saxman Dick Oatts and percussionist Luis Conte, who is perfect for this environment.

Drummer/composer Roland Vazquez was born in 1951, and upon witnessing a performance by Latin jazz conga legend Mongo Santamaria in 1963, he was inspired to follow a similar stylistic path. He played the drum kit in various R&B or rock bands around Los Angeles, then studied at Westminster College in Utah, receiving a B.A. He was back in L.A. shortly thereafter, forming his fusion combos the L.A.
