Tomorrow, In a Year

Tomorrow, In a Year

After three records of groundbreaking electronic pop, siblings Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer set down a path some fans anticipated they’d take at some point in their career. The duo took a fairly huge leap into the world of opera, partnering with the Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma and writing a work based on Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of the Species. This studio version of the opera, Tomorrow, in a Year, is the equivalent of a double-disc set. It's a sprawling, rich, and somewhat puzzling foray into an intellectually stimulating collision of experimental electronic music and classical opera. The robust and lovely voice of mezzo soprano Kristina Wahlin is often surrounded by oscillating synth notes that are static-wrapped and far from melodic. Compositions drift and glide, with blinking neon nodes of sound or blaring, blood-chilling sirens warning of dire events. Like a landscape ravaged by weather or war, Tomorrow, in a Year is bleakly beautiful, definitely what you'd call art, and well worth your scrutiny. It’s a bit of work, but for fans of The Knife it’ll pay handsome rewards.
