Album Review

Drummer/percussionist Noel Okimoto's Ohana CD is a bit of a mixed bag. It alternates between relatively straight-ahead post-bop, a few Afro-Cuban Latin jazz numbers, and some "contemporary" poppish crossover ballads. The performances certainly keep one guessing, as styles alternate from cut to cut. Pianist Makoto Ozone excels in all genres and trumpeter Tiger Okoshi has a few heated solos. The highlights include "Sister Noches," some funk à la Eddie Harris on "You Buggah," the eccentric "Myochlonic Jerk" (which has Ozone hinting at Chick Corea), and the cheerful "Pop's Bop." Although a few of the numbers are throwaways, overall this is a worthwhile and eclectic set.
