About Jolie Holland

With her fluid vocal delivery, impressionistic lyrics, and rootsy influences, Jolie Holland became a cult heroine in the singer/songwriter realm during the 2000s. Born in Houston, TX, in 1975, she soaked up multiple strands of American roots music that eventually informed her songwriting style. After moving to Vancouver, BC, she started the all-female folk band The Be Good Tanyas in 1999, but by the time their first album was released in 2001, she had left the group. Her 2003 DIY debut, Catalpa, was a bare-bones, lo-fi record that earned enough attention to nab her a deal with Anti- Records, who put out the more fully realized follow-up, Escondida, in 2004. Holland’s idiosyncratic sound soon attracted famous fans like Tom Waits, and over time she would guest on tracks by a wide array of artists including David Gray, Booker T. Jones, and Bad Religion’s Greg Graffin. She came full circle in 2017 by releasing a duo record with her former Be Good Tanyas bandmate Samantha Parton.
