Nineteenth-Century Baptists and Church Discipline: Case Studies from Georgia (Report)

Description

Church discipline, rather than simply being of arcane interest, is beginning once again to garner serious discussion among many Baptists. Current events have nearly demanded that some sort of discipline be applied given the immoral activities of many high profile pastors, both Baptist and non-Baptist, including Ted Haggard, former pastor of the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Paul Williams, former associate pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church, Cordova, Tennessee. Moreover, a number of Baptist pastors and laypeople have been accused and convicted of unspeakable, criminal behaviors. As a result, some Baptists believe some sort of moral enforcement may well be necessary in the post-modern church. Are the seeming increase in sins and crimes because discipline has fallen by the wayside? If so, perhaps history has something to teach us. (1)
