Jassbusters

Jassbusters

Jassbusters is many things: It’s the Kiwi psych-pop experimentalist’s first recording with a band. It’s a concept album about characters he invented 20 years ago—a music teacher named Bostyn and his student, Dobsyn. It’s the name of Bostyn’s fictional band, comprising fictional music teachers. Recorded live, Mockasin’s third album is also unlike anything he’s released before. Though weird and wonky as ever, it’s far more melancholic, minimal and carefully structured, finding the artist at both his most tender and bizarre. “Momo’s” is an exquisite James Blake duet, made for desolate midnights in dimly lit jazz bars, while unnerving spoken-word interludes puncture the album’s gentle wooziness with strange, affectionate student-teacher dialogue.
