About D4L

The rap group D4L (“Down for Life”) will go down in hip-hop history as trailblazers of the Atlanta snap music era. • Shawty Lo—founder of the independent label D4L Records—teamed up with rising rappers Fabo, Mook B and Stoney to form D4L in 2003. • The group released their debut album Down 4 life in 2004. The local success of its single “Betcha Can’t Do It Like Me” landed them a deal with Dee Money Records. • D4L rereleased their eponymous album in 2005 and earned a gold certification. The single “Laffy Taffy” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. • In 2007, the year after D4L disbanded, the Guinness Book of World Records cited “Laffy Taffy” as the song with the most ringtone downloads. • Shawty’s 2008 solo debut, Units in the City, went Top 5 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. • In September 2016, Shawty Lo was killed in a car crash in Atlanta. He was 40 years old.
