Albumrecension

This fine sampler has 15 of the first 20 recordings cut by the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Dating from 1934-1935, these performances were a bit revolutionary for the time because not only did they feature one of jazz's great violinists in Stephane Grappelli, but its top guitarist of the 1930s, Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt and Grappelli were also the first major jazz musicians from Europe and the music that they created in their string group (with two rhythm guitarist and a bassist) could out-swing nearly all of the ensembles of the time. Although it would be preferred to have all 20 of their early recordings (all of which could have fit on this single CD), what is here is wonderful, with the highlights including "Dinah," "Tiger Rag," "Blue Drag," "Avalon," "I've Had My Moments," and "Djangology."
