Albumrecension

The debut album from Things of Stone and Wood, The Yearning, was a gem, full of the band's trademark bittersweet folk-pop, with an unmistakably Australian feel. It was the brilliantly crafted "Happy Birthday Helen" that began to get the attention of Australian radio. While this song was the most successful single from the album, several others ("Share This Wine," "Rock This Boat" and "Single Perfect Raindrop") became minor radio hits. Much of Things of Stone and Wood's music dealt in familiar Australian images — and especially images of Melbourne — from the Yarra River ("Happy Birthday Helen") to songs about suburban Melbourne ("Heidelberg" and "Barkly Street") and the Housing Commission flats that dominate sections of the city's skyline in "Share This Wine." Things of Stone and Wood are also one of only a few Australian bands who deal in the sort of social commentary more usually associated with Midnight Oil, from the rise of racism in Australia ("Heidelberg") to the slow destruction of the Australian Aboriginal culture ("Is This Where I Must Lie"), and inner-city decay ("Barkly Street"). The Yearning was a superb debut from Things of Stone and Wood, mixing thoughtful lyrics with brilliant pop melodies.
