Robert Wells is best known as the lyricist who matched a sensitive tune by Mel Tormé to create the holiday classic "The Christmas Song" — instantly recognizable by its opening image: "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...." In fact, he wrote more than 150 songs with Tormé, including "Born to Be Blue." He was also nominated for three songwriting Oscars, for "It's Easy to Say" (from 10), "County Fair" (from So Dear to My Heart), and the title song of From Here to Eternity. Wells also spent much of his time as the producer and head writer for The Dinah Shore Chevy Show, and won four Emmy awards for it (plus two with Shirley MacLaine's If They Could See Me Now).
