A Taiwainese band led by singer, multi-instrumentalist, and actor Jam Hsiao, Lion emerged in 2016 with a sound steeped in melodic hard rock and pop and turned heads the following year after appearing on the fifth season of the popular Chinese music competition program Singer 2017. Hsiao rose to fame in 2007 after participating in the first season of One Million Star, the Taiwanese equivalent of American Idol. He spent the next several years finding success in film, television, and music, releasing several chart-topping albums and earning multiple Golden Horse (film) and Golden Music awards. In 2016 he formed the rock group Lion with Lee Q Wu, Tsou Chiang, and Liu Zhaomao and released an eponymous debut album. In 2017 the band joined China's Singer television competition and placed third. The exposure boosted the sales of Lion's debut and earned them a Golden Melody Award nomination. The following year saw the release of the covers LP Replay, which they promoted by winning "Best Band" at that year's Mandopop Festival. ~ James Christopher Monger
