|1||VideoThe Economic Benefits of a Firefighter Health Promotion and Wellness Program||One of the major roadblocks preventing fire departments from implementing a wellness program is cost and concerns about economic benefit. Therefore, the objective of this session is to evaluate the impact of a health promotion program on lifestyle behaviors and occupational injury/illness rates among firefighters participating in the PHLAME Study. The PHLAME program improved diet and exercise behaviors, body weight, and reduced fire department occupational injury/illness/disability claims with a cost savings of over $1200 per firefighter after the first year. The PHLAME program is a low cost, team-based, firefighter health promotion and wellness program that is easily implemented with the expectation of an immediate positive return on investment.||16 6 09||Free||View In iTunes|
|2||VideoThe Effects of Sleep Deprivation On Fire Fighters and EMS Responders||Fire fighting is one of the few professions in which a majority of work sites maintains a 24-hour work structure (with some fire departments adopting a 48-hour shift). Because of this unique work schedule, firefighters are at increased risk of developing sleep deprivation, fatigue, and the compounded effects of prolonged shift work contributing to accidents and injuries. The objective of this workshop is to present a comprehensive report on sleep deprivation with strategies to counteract the effects of fatigue, developed by the IAFC and USFA in partnership with researchers at Oregon Health and Science University.||16 6 09||Free||View In iTunes|
