Aterciopelados don’t abandon their punk and folk roots on this adventurous, slightly psychedelic set so much as spread their wings across all of South America and beyond. Electronic tango (“Maligno”), sensuous bossa nova (“Doctora Corazón,” “Días”), smoky jazz (“Péndulo”), quiet samba (“Cosmos”), disco funk (“Humo y Alquitrán”)—Andrea Echeverri’s soothing, hypnotic vocals drift over them all like a sea breeze. Her hypnotic voice, as earthy and passionate as Patti Smith’s, gives these songs their aching heart.
