Album Review

DJ Spinna adds another gem to his impressive array of mix albums with The Beyond Real Experience, Vol. 2. The New York turntablist throws down tracks from his own hip-hop label, Beyond Real. Many of the same rappers show up continually in the mix: Old World Disorder, Shadowman, Guru, Skam, Mr. Akil, and Sadat X, all of whom make multiple appearances. Plus, Spinna throws in several tracks by his own rap group, Jigmastas. Most of the featured rappers are up-and-comers at this point in time, 2002, though it's great to see Guru and Sadat X here, two veterans from the early '90s. The mixing, of course, is unbelievable. Spinna not only showcases some of the best releases from his label; he also showcases some of his best turntablist techniques.

DJ Spinna's accomplishments surpass those of most DJs, yet he remained strictly an underground artist despite his astonishing talent. Though primarily known for his hip-hop work, Spinna also expanded his reach to include downtempo house music as well. The New York DJ remixed tracks for many artists such as Soulstice and Nightmares on Wax. He also produced a number of artists such as rappers Guru and J-Live and his own rap group, Jigmastas.
