Album Review

Ray Smith, after making a number of commercially unsuccessful rockabilly recordings for Sun Records, moved to the Judd label (owned by Sam Phillip's brother) and scored two hits in 1960: "Rockin' Little Angel" and "Put Your Arms Around Me Honey." An album, Travelin' With Ray, was released the same year. This CD, which shares the title and cover art of that LP, is an expanded affair with 33 tracks. Most of Smith's Sun and Judd recordings are here (including the two hits and several previously unreleased cuts), along with a handful of sides made for VeeJay, Infinity, and other small labels in the '60s. Although Travelin' With Ray is hard to find and overlaps considerably with Charly's Ray Smith CD (Shake Around), it has enough exclusive and rare material to make it very worthwhile for fans.
