Will Oldham has been recording whisky-hued Americana folk tunes since 1993, somehow always placing himself right at the fulcrum of timeless and contemporary. This album finds him in fine form, his voice authoritative and nimble on the modern waltz of "No Match" and tastefully going to the rafters over blazing guitars on "Cows". The album introduced audiences to the commanding vocals of the young Angel Olsen, and their duet on the midnight blues of "New Tibet" is the sound of the alt-country torch being passed.
