Biography

b. Stephen John Berry, 24 August 1957, Gosport, Hampshire, England. Eagerly musical from an early age, Berry first played violin, then guitar, followed by bass guitar before choosing the double bass. Chris Laurence became his first tutor and was followed by Daryl Runswick and Dave Holland. In the 80s, Berry was a founder member of Loose Tubes, touring internationally and recording with the band. At the end of the decade he settled in Lancashire, in the north-west of England, where he led bands and played as sideman. In 1992 he became a long-term associate of Mike Westbrook and Kate Westbrook. During the 90s, Berry developed a parallel career in musical education, teaching bass and improvisation classes at the Royal Northern College of Music and Chetham’s School of Music. He also became Director of Burnley Jazz Summer School, Musical Director of the Jam Factory, a 32-piece community creative jazz orchestra in Blackburn, Lancashire, and Animateur in Composition for Worcestershire Education Authority. He conducts workshops throughout the UK. Berry has played with several former Loose Tubes associates including Django Bates and Iain Ballamy, while the members of a regular quartet he has led, Foolish Hearts, are pianist Nikki Iles, vibraphonist Anthony Kerr and drummer Paul Clarvis. Among many other musicians with whom he has worked are Ian Carr, Tal Farlow, Art Farmer, Scott Hamilton, Billy Jenkins, Ute Lemper, Dick Morrissey, John Surman, Lew Tabackin, and Jessica Williams. He has also recorded with Les Chisnall (piano) and Dave Walsh (drums) as Fortune Heights. Berry has also worked in pit bands of musical shows, including touring versions of West Side Story and Blues In The Night. He has established his own label, Room For Music Records.
