Keiko was my best student. She worked harder, wrote more and taught better. And, as her students grew and her books on Japanese film increased, she always called me sensei--teacher. But, of course, she was also a sensei herself, one who will now be truly missed. Those who studied under her at the University of Pittsburgh have lost a real mentor. Her books, however, remain: Cinema East: A Critical Study of Major Japanese Films (1983), Mizoguchi (1984), Japanese Classical Theater in Films (1994), From Book to Screen: Modern Japanese Literature in Films (2000), and Reading a Japanese Film: Cinema in Context, (chosen as a "Choice" Outstanding Academic Title of 2006) and the recently completed and shortly to be published The World of Hiroshi Shimizu: A Forgotten Veteran of Japanese Cinema. She was currently working on a book on Japanese women directors. This legacy will allow us to continue to profit by her industry and her insights-and to understand more through that fine attitude she had toward herself and her accomplishments. As she once told me: "The more I teach the more like a student I feel." --Donald Richie
