Album Review

Long after the Three Degrees' popularity had faded in the United States, the Philadelphia natives remained visible in their new home of England. Instead of sticking with the type of Philly soul and disco they embraced during the 1970s under the insightful direction of Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff, they changed with the times and embraced more high-tech urban contemporary sounds. Sounding like it was tailor-made for urban radio, ...And Holding is hardly their finest hour. Though a remake of Jerry Butler's "Make It Easy on Yourself" is fairly likeable, automatic pilot numbers like "Tie U Up," "Are You That Kind of Guy" and "Vital Signs" are as contrived as they are pedestrian. To be sure, a compilation of the trio's Philadelphia International material would be a much wiser investment.

Philly soul vocal group the Three Degrees started in 1963 in Philadelphia, PA. They were discovered by producer and songwriter Richard Barrett. Barrett was a key force for 1950s groups the Chantels, Little Anthony & the Imperials, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and his own group the Valentines. The original lineup was Fayette Pickney, Shirley Porter, and Linda Turner. Barrett recorded this lineup on their first single, "Gee Baby (I'm Sorry)."
