Album Review

A lot of spacier nineties rock gets described as "psychedelic, " but Whipped Cream takes this word back to its original meanings — their neo-rock-psychedelia is so closely linked to the sixties and early seventies that it tends to sound rather tired. Whipped Cream and Other Delights is no exception — when the band covers the Beatles' "Come Together" and winds up sounding like a slicked-up Jimi Hendrix track, it's clear that no element of forward thinking found its way into the studio. The album does wind up as a pretty unique collection of songs, simply because no other nineties bands seem so willing to revive an already-done sound — but most listeners would probably be happy with the sixties and seventies psychedelic source material the band is drawing from.
