These recordings were originally intended to become Department of Eagles’ sophomore album but were left on the cutting-room floor to make way for the remarkable 2008 opus In Ear Park. Surprisingly, the unfinished nature of these pieces works in their favour, as they evoke the fractured baroque folk music that Daniel Rossen would perfect with Grizzly Bear. “While We’re Young” pirouettes about with twisting guitars and cooing harmonies, while the fingerpicked “Deadly Disclosure” fades between its various sections like a wintry psychedelic pageant.
