Album Review

Latin rockers Huecco have crafted a seamless mix of rock, pop, hip-hop, son, and samba that the band calls “rumbaton.” Their 2006 debut album made a big splash in the Latin pop world, and the follow-up, Assalto, tones down the reggaeton aspect of the sound a bit, pushing the band’s rock influences a little more to the forefront. Cuts like the opening track, “Mis Bichitos,” strike the perfect blend of driving rock and percolating Latin rhythm, while there are plenty of other stylistic detours over the course of the album, from flamenco-flecked ballads to hip-hop/pop/Latin hybrids.

Latin alternative group Huecco were formed by Ivahn, former vocalist with the late-'90s hip-hop/rock fusion group Sugarless. Sugarless founding member Frankie, a guitar player studying at the Musicians Institute in L.A., assembled likeminded musicians Ivahn and drummer Samuel in 1994; Sugarless were completed in 1997 by bass player Joseba.
