In stark contrast to the swaggering bravado of Stone Temple Pilots’ debut, Purple wallows in psychedelic murk littered with fractured psyches. Scott Weiland sounds downright frazzled on the violently careening "Unglued"; likewise for "Lounge Fly", which finds the group slowing to a menacing crawl. Throughout, their arena-sized sound is smothered in churning drums, weary guitars and Weiland's ragged growl. Even on the catchy “Interstate Love Song”—which boasts a fabulous, Led Zeppelin-inspired groove—the band’s temperament comes stained with sadness and loss.

Stone Temple Pilots were able to turn alternative rock into stadium rock; naturally, they became the most critically despised band of their era. Accused by many critics of being nothing more than ripoff artists who pilfered from Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains, the bandmates nevertheless became major stars in 1993.
