In their heyday, N Sync made a couple of tentative moves toward R&B, but nothing could have prepared fans for Justin Timberlake’s transformation into a groove-based lifeform. Justified, his debut solo album, posits him as a loose, funny (hear his instructions to female audience members on the breakdown of "Señorita") and thoroughly assured performer. In fact, the disc proved fine (as in fiiine) enough to promote discussion of Timberlake as an artist, rather than just a celebrity. Collaborating with the Neptunes and Timbaland, the star displays a high comfort level with Latin-tinged soul, Stevie Wonder-style balladry (“Nothin’ Else”), and updated ’70s pop-funk (“Rock Your Body,” which could be a lost K.C. and the Sunshine Band single). If great pop means continued payoff through many listens, as well as the occasional nudge toward the future, well then, call this one just that.
