If the title Making Dens evokes childhood memories of improvising secret spaces from whatever’s lying around, then it’s perfect for a debut that builds its own intimate world by grabbing randomly from the history of rock. In just four minutes, “Alas Agnes” takes in garage-punk, prog time patterns, barroom skiffle and football-terrace harmonies with a playful eccentricity that characterises most tracks here. However, the gorgeous melancholy of “Soluble In Air” reveals a band who also know the power of restraint.

The Syd Barrett-worshiping indie outfit Mystery Jets formed in the early '90s when the group's shock-headed frontman, Blaine Harrison, was only 12.
