Album Review

LAL, a collaboration between singer Rosina Kazi and post-hip-hop beat junkie Nick Murray, specializes in songs that inhabit a shadowy borderland between trip-hop, ambient, techno, Asian underground, and backpacker hip-hop. Kazi's voice is consistently gauzy and soft, while Murray's beats and atmospheres range a bit more broadly in style, from the faintly Latin "Saturn" to the darkly dubbed-up trip-hop of the album's highlight track, "Brown Eyed Warrior." Kazi sings pleasantly, but often she seems to be improvising a melody, and not doing so with much enthusiasm; at her worst, she ignores the harmonic framework of Murray's accompaniment altogether and goes painfully astray, as on the gently excruciating "Creep." (The groove may be fundamental, guys, but key does matter.) But for the most part, Warm Belly High Power creates a mood that is consistently sleepy but powerful, one that will have you lazily debating whether you'd rather just luxuriate on the sofa while you listen or get up and boogie slowly — very slowly — around the coffee table. Recommended.
