Prince always leapt between moods and styles without fear. The consummate rule-breaker continued to push himself with 1993’s dense and delirious Love Symbol Album. Backed by the horn-driven sound of The New Power Generation, he filled this heady concept album with brassy bursts of big-band jazz, hard-driving funk workouts and nods to the fierce swing of early ‘90s hip-hop. It’s a dizzying trip, whether you’re looking to get lost in a psychedelic dance-rock epic (“7”) or get loose to down-and-dirty R&B (“Sexy M.F.”).

"Welcome to the New Power Generation," announced Prince in "Eye No," the opening song on his 1988 album Lovesexy. Two years later, the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack contained "New Power Generation" with a group of the same name credited as background vocalists. The New Power Generation was featured on Prince's Diamonds and Pearls (1991) and The Love Symbol Album (1992), then went on to release albums credited to the group on its own, such as Goldnigga (a platform for rapping associate Tony M, 1993),...
