Album Review

There are probably no bands that could appeal to both the hipster alt-rock of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the noise overload of Lightning Bolt. But hey, there's always a first for everything. Case in point, the oddly titled one-man band Vverevvolf Grehv and his 2008 debut full-length, Zombie Aesthetics. The Faint's Dapose is the head honcho here, and he's obviously spent a lot of time wading through oodles of loops, blips, beeps, and samples in order to come up with the sonic miasma that lurks throughout the album, ranging from electro dance-rock ("Eureka Ghost") to a guitar-led instrumental that sounds like a dentist's drill gone mad ("Year Zero") to even a track that sounds comparable to Dr. Frankenstein coming up with an electronic musical readout and inviting "the Monster" to supply vocals ("Voodoo Pantheon"). While the harsh electro sounds on Zombie Aesthetics may not be pleasing to the ears of many tunesmiths, it certainly shows that Mr. Dapose is all about pushing the sonic envelope.
