Album Review

A more than welcome third entry in the soundtrack series drawn from the original Star Trek. This time around the cues are compiled from one of Alexander Courage's rare scores for the show ("The Naked Time") and Gerald Fried's score for "Shore Leave." Amazingly, the mastering this time is an improvement over the previous release in the series — and that disc sounded terrific. Musically, the cues here are generally more traditional, with few of the instrumental effects used in scores for episodes such as "Amok Time." Altogether, an enjoyable disc.

Philadelphia native Alexander Courage is famous for co-writing the theme for the original Star Trek TV series with the show's creator Gene Roddenberry. The mid-'60s NBC-TV series went on to become a phenomenon during it's run in rerun syndication and spawned several movie versions and successful TV spin-offs. Raised in New Jersey, he earned a bachelor's degree in 1941 from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Courage served a five-year stint in the United States Army during World War II....
