The pastel medium has been around for several centuries, with roots as old as mankind.
An ever-increasing number of artists have since discovered the rich colors and expressiveness of pastel painting.
This app will let you create beautiful digital works of art, especially if you're a talented artist.
If you're not, iPastels will keep you entertained until you become one through practice and experience!
Simulating soft (chalk) pastels, oil pastels and color blending, the iPastels app aspires to be as realistic as possible.
Actual pastelists can use iPastels to try out ideas and compositions before starting on a new painting in real life.
Beginners will be able to practise and refine their skills, without the added cost of pastel sticks and specialty papers.
One of the most widely used techniques in pastel is to use your finger to blend the colors into each other right on the paper, as part of the painting process.
Using iPastels, paint with different colors and then use Smudge (the finger) or the Cotton Swab to blend and smoothen the colors.
This produces amazing results!
Full Screen Painting:
Full Screen mode is fully supported.
In addition, you can press the Tab key to hide the toolbar.
Zooming And Panning:
Pinch (trackpad) or use keyboard shortcuts to zoom in/out.
To pan, drag with two fingers (trackpad), slide with one finger (Magic Mouse) or use arrow keys.
Double tap with two fingers (trackpad) or press Space to reset the zoom/pan.
The image consists of 3 transparent layers on top of each other.
To switch between the different layers, use the button that has what looks like a stack of papers in addition to a small symbol (e.g. a flower) of the currently selected layer.
Click once on a color to select it. Click a second time to bring up a menu where you can change or adjust the color in a number of ways (this menu also features an Eyedropper tool).
Adjacent to the colors you will find buttons to switch between the different color sets.
Press a second time if you want to replace the color set with one of the default ones.
For information on what a specific button does, just hover the mouse pointer above it for a few seconds and a short explanation will appear.

What's New in Version 2.1.1
Improved trackpad support, to avoid accidental zooming/panning while painting.
Added support for Mac OS X El Capitan's Split View mode.
Lots of optimizations, with assembler code and improved use of multiple CPU cores.
The stored paintings (Work in Progress) now take up significantly less storage space, (they will not be re-saved until you select them, so it might be a good idea to cycle through them).
Added a new Eyedropper tool (Pro feature, found in the menu that appears when you click a 2nd time on the selected color).
Brush strokes initiated immediately after one another will now share the same Undo step.
When the toolbar automatically hides (by painting near it) it is now gone for a slightly longer time, to facilitate painting with quickly repeated brush strokes.
New animated "Please Wait" messages.
After clearing the painting or one of its layers, the app now automatically switches to the last used pastel tool (if needed), since there's absolutely no use for e.g. an Eraser on a blank painting.
(Pro) You can now Swap the selected layer with any other layer, instead of just the layer directly above/below.
Added new 'Move Layer in Stack' (Pro) feature.
Fixed some minor memory leaks.
Fixed a bug that could make the 'Change Layer' button temporarily show the wrong icon if pressed repeatedly.
Some additional improvements, optimizations and bug fixes.
