Indie pop trio Regal Degal formed in Brooklyn in 2009, consisting of singer/guitarist Josh da Costa, drummer Jamen Whitelock, and bassist Josiah Wolfson. The group initially had a rough, noisy, experimental rock sound reminiscent of '70s Krautrock as well as the artier side of early-'80s New York post-punk. In 2010, the group's debut recording, Format Worth, a 40-minute cassette of messy, primarily instrumental experiments, was released in an extremely limited edition by Brooklyn-based RVNG Intl. The group's first vinyl release was 2011's Speckled Fruit EP on Roti Records, which revealed the band's pop sensibility as heavily inspired by New Zealand's Flying Nun label, and contained a 19-minute noise-rock jam on the record's B-side. The group relocated to Los Angeles and began collaborating with Jimi Hey, known for his work with Beachwood Sparks, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Glass Candy, and several other bands. The band's sound became more lush and spacious, as they were no longer confined to cramped Brooklyn practice studios. Debut full-length Veritable Who's Who appeared in 2012 on Post Present Medium. The group moved back to Brooklyn and came in contact with Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, who signed Regal Degal to his imprint Terrible Records. The group toured with Grizzly Bear in 2013, and released the 12" EP Pyramid Bricks, which featured five songs ranging from hazy garage pop to drum machine-heavy post-punk disco. Regal Degal's second album, Not Now, co-produced by Taylor in Brooklyn and Berlin, arrived on Terrible Records in May of 2015, continuing their sonic evolution into sleekly produced yet hazy psych-pop. ~ Paul Simpson
