About Velvelettes

Though the Velvelettes never became stars on the level of their Motown labelmates the Supremes or Martha & the Vandellas, girl group collectors remember their sassy, soulful mid-1960s hits like "Needle In A Haystack" and "He Was Really Sayin' Something." (In the 1980s, new-generation girl groups the Belle Stars and Bananarama, respectively, covered those two songs.) Formed in Detroit in 1961, the group's original lineup consisted of Bertha Barbee McNeal, Mildred Gill, Norma Barbee, Carolyn "Cal" Gill, and Betty Kelly. By late 1965, the group consisted of Cal Gill, Sandra Tilley, and Annette MacMillan, a lineup that lasted until 1967.
