Joe Albany came very close to being one of the lost legends, a pioneering bebop pianist who barely recorded until Spotlite released a private solo recital of his in 1971. The follow-up Lp (which also came out domestically on the Revelation label) has Albany playing five unaccompanied solos (including "You Don't Know What Love Is" and "Like Someone In Love") plus six trio numbers with bassist Bob Whitlock and either Jerry McKenzie or Nick Martinis on drums; best of the latter is "When Lights Are Low" and "Yardbird Suite." Despite an out-of-tune piano on a few of the songs, this is a worthy and historical set.

Looking at pianist Joe Albany's life in hindsight, it is miraculous that he lived to almost reach 64. Serious problems with drugs and alcohol resulted in a series of harrowing incidents and his domestic life would never be described as tranquil (his second wife committed suicide while his third almost died from a drug overdose).
