    Oh no, not the cone!

    Oh no, not the cone!

In the midst of having to have his Labrador Retriever, Nacho (pictured on the show page), in an Elizabethan collar for an an extended period of time, Dr. Roger shares his empathy with pet owners whose pets and households that have to endure the cone. There is a reason refusal to leave the collar on as directed is one of the top - and one of the most frustrating for veterinarians - owner compliance failures that lead to bad consequences. It is because they are not fun!

Sometimes, E-collars are the only method to keep pets from licking or chewing at wounds, incisions or bandages. However, there are certain circumstances where alternatives to the traditional e-collar work that are less cumbersome to the pet (and pet parent). Unfortunately for Dr. Roger and his dog, alternatives are not workable options for the location and nature of Nacho's wound; but in the midst of his frustration with his very large and not very graceful dog wearing a giant big satellite dish on his head for 2 weeks, he discusses alternatives to the E-collar that are workable in certain situations.

    Dogs are not pack animals!

    Dogs are not pack animals!

There is an unfortunate enduring mythology that dogs are essentially pack animals like their ancient ancestor that they evolved from, the wolf. Thousands of years of evolution through cohabitation with humans and selective breeding have elapsed, making dogs very different from their ancient ancestor. They are far more complex than that, and trainers/dog parents that subscribe to the training through dominance and submission, are misguided and outdated, and are more likely to cause more harm than good.

In this listener email inspired episode, Dr. Roger discusses the marked differences between wolves and dogs, why training from a pack perspective is inappropriate at best and harmful to the dog at its worst; and how to select the best trainers the have follow the most modern understandings of canine behavior.
