Description

Who Can Read? Is an iPad book reader for beginning readers between the ages of 3 and 9. The app comes preloaded with FREE books, and additional books can be downloaded as in-app purchases. Each book features easy-to-read text, and beautiful illustrations and photographs. Each book also offers the option of a voice narration. The narrator can be turned off as the child improves his or her abilities and begins to read independently. Because it was designed by literacy experts, Who Can Read? is ideal for any child who is learning to read, and can be used at home or in a classroom setting.

Topics in nonfiction books include animals, nature, science, food, music, and more. Fiction stories feature characters and themes that kids can relate to, such as being brave or resourceful, and making friends.

Studies show that the best way to teach children to read is to match them up with books that are at their current reading level. Each book within the application is given a letter grade based on Guided Reading educational standards. The leveling system is explained in plain language in the application so parents know what level of book to start their child with. Books in the application are labeled from easiest (level A) to most challenging (level M). A gradient of book difficulty is a helpful tool for selecting just the “right” book for each child. Beginning readers build their fluency and comprehension skills when they read books that are not too easy and not too hard, allowing them to concentrate on comprehension instead of struggling to decode many unknown words.

Why our books work (AKA our secret sauce):

● The font is crisp and easy for beginning readers.
● Supportive pictures provide beginning readers with an extension of the ideas found in the text.
● The print is carefully spaced.
● The line breaks are carefully planned to support natural language and fluency.
● The characters and storylines are appealing to young children.
● The vocabulary for the stories is controlled but in a natural way (new words are introduced carefully).

What teachers and parents have to say about Who Can Read?:

“My daughter and I have really been enjoying this app – she loves the beautiful illustrations and photos, and she immediately figured out how to launch the books and proceed through the pages.”

“A well-thought-out and beautifully designed book reader for early and emergent readers. The books are designed by reading professionals and the prices are great. Highly recommended as a reading teacher.”

“My 6-year-old reads the books to my 4-year old and they both enjoy the app. Cute pictures and fun, age-appropriate stories.”

“My first graders continue to be thrilled and engaged with their e-reading on the iPads. I have created a handy docking station where students can retrieve and put away iPads independently. I have also introduced them to the narrator voice (with headphones). That has been excellent for students of all levels but particularly it gives my challenged readers more opportunity to experience and enjoy books.”
