Tibet was an independent country up until the 1950s when the Chinese invaded Tibet and claimed it as part of China. There is one region in China that is called the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR), but Tibetan people argue that there is no true autonomy from the Chinese. Many Tibetans fled to neighboring countries of India and Nepal, where there continue to be Tibetan communities and an active Tibetan government-in-exile still operates in India. Some moved on to settle in other parts of the world. Tibetans all over the world continue to be led by their spiritual leader His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. In 1990, the Tibetan Resettlement Project placed 1,000 Tibetan “stateless persons” in one of 25 settlement centers. Today there are approximately 9,000 Tibetans in the U.S., and Minnesota has the second largest Tibetan population in the country.
