Frank and Steve Smith are brothers who teach in the history department of a state university in China, Ill. They also happen to be legends in their own minds who will often sacrifice facts, lessons and syllabi for the sake of being awesome. China, IL is a reverse Animal House where the teachers are crazy and the students just want to learn.

Brad Seems Watered Down

I cannot put my finger on what exactly is missing, but if I had not followed Neely for years, I doubt I would stick with the cartoon. I can't help but feel like he is being censored, or at least creatively sanded down, structurally as well as content wise. The contemplative tone is missing. The strange profundity has been traded for a tiresome zaniness. Everyone seems too happy, and what I have come to expect from Neely is a very specific magnification of very real unhappiness. The original pilot has a pathos I find absent. The straight-man characterization of pony feels like someone else's idea.
Neely's songs, while present in what feels like truncated form are great. I really feel like Neely is a pretty talented musician, and scenes like the Animal Orgy are perfect in full animation. The background touches are pretty rad as well. But something is missing.

Best ever...

Short and sweet. Its collage humor at its finest.
