iTunes Editors' Notes

In conjunction with 13 shows booked for their fall 2012 tour, the Melbourne quintet The Paper Kites have recorded and released an autumnal-sounding EP of indie-tinged folk-rock. On their own, Sam Bentley’s subtle nasal-toned vocals sometimes sound like those of Chris Gunst (Beachwood Sparks, Mystic Chords of Memory). But when the backing vocals come in on “A Maker of My Time,” Bentley takes ownership of the song and steers it like a ship through choppy waves. “Leopold Street” follows with a gentler kind of folk that sounds equally inspired by post–Fairport Convention solo albums by Ian Matthews and early 21st-century recordings by Neil Halstead. There’s also something magical that happens when Bentley sings harmonies over the Byrdsy chime of vintage-toned 12-string guitar leads and a tambourine—as heard on the outstanding “When Our Legs Grew Tall.” Conversely, the minimal accompaniment of “Paint” lets listeners really home in on the texture of his timbre and all the endearing imperfections in his voice. The closing lullaby, “Kiss the Grass,” finds Bentley’s boyish croon slathered in spacy reverb.
