Fasting has been practiced for thousands of years as a mind-body-spirit purification ritual by many cultures, and is still a popular practice in the yogic and martial arts communities. I have long practiced short fasts a few times of year, when my body is feeling tired and toxic, and have always found it to be a rewarding experience.
The program consists of 4 days of preparation: the gradual purification and reduction of food intake. Followed by three days of light fasting. Then we take the next three days to gradually emerge from the fast and re-integrate whole foods. If this is your first experience with fasting, I suggest you consult a trusted health practitioner before you begin. Your doctor, naturopath, herbalist or pharmacist can be a good source of information and advice.
Do not fast if you are currently pregnant or nursing.
If you are purifying because you are planning to become pregnant in the near future, please ensure you take a high-quality multi-vitamin that includes the b-vitamins and folic acid during your fast.
Please do not participate if you are underweight or have any serious underlying health issues that would contra-indicate fasting.
If you are currently struggling with eating-related issues and feel that a short, guided fast can be helpful to you, please ensure that you also seek the help of a counselor, therapist, or mental health practitioner, to ensure that you have the professional help you need in facing any emotional distress that may arise.
