iTunes FINALLY has decent black folk metal!!

This album is a compilation CD, including both the entire "Sorcery is Strengthening the Black Glory of Russia'" (1998) debut album demo, as well as the "Fragments" (2001) mini-LP. However, don't let low-quality sound recording material deter you...this album is a fantastic compilation of their early material, and shows the quality of their expansion as a band, and how they overcame the typical stereotypes of traditional blackened folk metal. They show how they truly are one of the best NSBM/Folk metal bands (at least from Eastern Europe), and the way they can transport you from simply listening to their music and into a world of their own creation is unbelievable to say the least.

Excellent Material, Though Not the Best Intro to Their Sound

When one has fully absorbed the greatness of Folkstorm, Horizons, and Haunted Dreamscapes, it is natural that one would want to see where Temnozor came from. Sorcery of Fragments is a completionist document of Temnozor's early years, compiling material from their initial full-length and their more experimental and ambiance oriented EP, Fragments. Both releases showcase an adventurous young band still working out their synthesis of Slavic folk music, pagan mythology, black metal, and ambient music. Occasionally, the transitions between each are a bit clumsy, but for the most part, the music flows smoothly. In that respect, a comparison might be made to Veles' second full-length, Black Hateful Metal, which I'm almost positive was an influence. The production might leave a bit to be desired for someone listening to this after familiarizing themselves with Folkstorm, but the low-fi sound generally fits the vibe of the compositions and is still miles ahead of the typical Blazebirth Hall sound (from which Temnozor sprang) in terms of accessibility. New listeners are encouraged to start with Folkstorm, but for those well-acquainted with Temnozor's oevure, this is a must purchase.
