Tony Allen, Flea + Damon Albarn - Need I say more?!?

Great Stuff!

If you are looking for RHCP or Gorillaz sound, DO NOT BUY THIS. This is a very funky, experimental, afrobeat style album. This is not your radio-friendly style of music that these musicians usually release. If you don't know what afrobeat is, look it up, if it doesn't groove you, don't buy this. Tony Allen is 70 some odd years old, but still drums out some funky beats.

I love this album, but I can understand that if you came here looking for another Gorilla or RHCP album that you would be disappointed.

Why the rap?

The album is okay, and Flea's playing doesn't annoy me as much as I thought it might - he actually locks in pretty well with Allen and leaves a lot of his over-the-top bass slapping aside. I like some of the instrumental cuts and the horns and vocals by Fatoumata Diawara are great, but the rap element is just not necessary. They are fine raps, nothing against M.anifest, but the album just doesn't need it. To me, the raps don't fit with the overall vibe and really hurt some of the tracks.

The project of Damon Albarn, Tony Allen, and Flea, Rocket Juice & the Moon began when the three musicians met on a plane in 2008 when they were going to Lagos to work with Albarn's Africa Express collective. Realizing how much they all had in common, the three musicians made plans to record when they could, and by late 2010, they had nearly finished their first album. The group made its live debut nearly a year later, in October 2011 at Ireland's Cork Jazz Festival, and played another gig a few days...
