iTunes Review

It’s no wonder why Big Star’s shimmering 1972 debut became a go-to for future power-pop/rock legends like Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, and The Replacements. Primary songwriters Chris Bell and ex-Box Tops singer Alex Chilton were a brilliant team that created sing-along anthems with gorgeous guitar and vocal hooks. The horn-stoked “Feel,” the psych-folk popper “The Ballad of El Goodo,” and the soul-deep “When My Baby’s Beside Me” are downright inescapable. The acoustic-driven heartbreakers sting the most, such as the yearning lament “Thirteen” and the valentine to regret “Give Me Another Chance.”

Number 1 record

from the day it was available on shelves, this should've been a number one record. Sadly, Big Stars following happened years after, closer to the tragic death of the incredibly loved Chris Bell. Big Star deserves so much more credit than they are given, this album is awesome.

Classic

One of the best power pop records ever

Ahead of its time

You would not believe this was written in the 70s given its alternative sound. It is constantly considered one of the most influential records of the power pop sound that just wasn’t given the credit it deserved. Ardent and Stax just didn’t know what to do with this in their Memphis catalog. Give it a listen for The Ballad of El Goodo, Thirteen, In the Street, hell ALL of the tracks are great. Then go listen to Radio City and then don’t forget I Am The Cosmos! If you want to learn about the early days of alternative music, then this is where you start!

Formed: 1971 in Memphis, TN

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

The quintessential American power pop band, Big Star remains one of the most mythic and influential cult acts in all of rock & roll. Originally led by the singing and songwriting duo of Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, the Memphis-based group fused the strongest elements of the British Invasion era -- the melodic invention of the Beatles, the whiplash guitars of the Who, and the radiant harmonies of the Byrds -- into a ramshackle but poignantly beautiful sound that recaptured the spirit of pop's past...
