Born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1956, but raised mostly in Brooklyn, the remarkable Sharon Jones cut her R&B teeth in church, and for much of her adult life, she held day jobs (including a stint as a prison guard at Riker’s Island) while grabbing occasional studio work and a few wedding gigs. A session (backing Lee Fields) for tiny Desco Records in 1996 got the ball rolling, and a decade later, at age 50, she was an internationally recognized talent and considerable concert draw, belting out classic, ‘60s-style R&B for adoring audiences and for Daptone, the tight-knit label that grew out of Desco’s ashes. Jones’s third album celebrates the period — mid to late '60s — when soul music was losing what was left of its innocence and morphing into gritty funk. With the Dap-Kings, the label’s ostensible house band, providing support both as songwriters and musicians, Jones tours from Muscle Shoals (“Nobody’s Baby”) to Motown (“Tell Me”) to Memphis (“Be Easy”), with nods to James Brown (“Let Them Knock”) and Otis Redding (“Humble Me”). The slinky “When the Other Foot Drops, Uncle” and limber, minor-keyed boogaloo “Keep On Looking” are slightly offbeat winners, and a burning, supremely funky cover of “Answer Me” reminds us of Jones’s (and R&B’s) gospel roots.

Just stepped out the time machine...

Amy Whohouse? Sharon Jones is the real deal. Pop her fanny in a time machine and send her back to 1962 and she would be a huge, huge star. Total commitment to the genre. Total commitment to the performance. Too bad in 2007 people have to see her as a retro copycat. Can't an artist just be great in a genre without having to create some new sound? Does a genre have to evolve to stay relevant? Well, she's underappreciated, but she's not under-talented like so many of the so-called divas today *cough* Beyoncé *cough*. Girl was just born in the wrong decade. That's ok, let me tell you Sharon, it ain't gonna be easy, but something's changed, and in 100 days and 100 nights, people gonna know your name, so you stay humble girl, and let them knock you now, but when the other foot drops, you gonna be on top.

Just saw her live!

This album is great. I just saw her live and it is soooo much better! She is an amazing performer. But, just to reply to some of the other reviews...this is not a duplicate of older music, but a continuation and love for it. Sure, the older singers were great and the music was great, but are they still around making music? Most of them are not and if they are great...but does that mean no one else can come along and make more of it? With all the crap music that is out there today, it is so refreshing to find someone that is backed up by actual musicians and not a machine. Also, the Dap Kings are actually Sharon Jones' backup band and Amy Winehouse just used them to back her up, they are not her band. They are the house band for Daptone records. Either way, they are amazing.

What Music Should Be

This album sound is EXACTLY how modern R&B/Soul needs to be; Awesomely gifted and spectacular lyrics. Most music now lacks exactly this type of ability and im proud to buy this album.

By the sound of them, you would have thought Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings started making funk-threaded soul music together in the 1960s. Few devotedly retro acts were as convincing. Few singers as skilled as Sharon Jones at stuffing notes with ache and meaning would be willing to invest in a sound so fully occupied by the likes of Bettye LaVette and Tina Turner in the Ike years, too. But what Jones brought to the funkified table had legs of its own -- eight of them, to be exact -- and they belonged...
