Album Review

The Lawrence, MA native known as Statik Selektah has made a name for himself as one of the most capable next-generation East Coast producer/DJs with his numerous mixtapes and compilation albums featuring all-star MCs over his boom-bap-inspired beats. Much like his two previous efforts, 100 Proof: The Hangover is a thoroughly enjoyable listen largely due to its choice (and lengthy) guest list. From seasoned East Coast veterans (Kool G Rap, M.O.P., Smif-N-Wessun, Havoc) to underground favorites (Talib Kweli, Consequence, Evidence), acclaimed up-and-coming lyricists (Wale, Torae), fellow Massachusetts representatives (Reks, Termanology, Masspike Miles), and even Dirty South rhymers (Bun B, Rapper Big Pooh), none of rappers on hand are phoning it in. The mix-and-match posse cuts are intriguing, Statik Selektah's Premier-esque scratched-up hooks recall plenty of classics from rap's yesteryear, and there are more than enough certified bangers included here to make 100 Proof a treat for any nostalgic hip-hop purist.

This ish goes hard. Wish this was the material on the radio, that other junk is dumbing down some already dumb people...truth. Bump this on a sunny day with the windows down throw a L in the sky and enjoy life man.

Did rating grab your attention?

I wanted this review to stand out amongst all of the other high reviews. I give this album a straight up STAR STAR STAR STAR STAR!!! This album is one of those rare gems we only stumble upon after listening to countless hours of nice but forgetable albums. The beats have a depth to them that shows the time and feeling put into them. The lyrics are inspired. I can feel the artisits speaking to me rather than speaking about themselves. Listen to Eighty-Two for an enticement.

Real Hip Hop is Alive

Almost single-handedly keeping true hip-hop alive. I've waiting for this album since I first heard "The Thrill is Gone" last summer. Any fan of artistry in hip-hop should definately cop the whole ablum, not one track disappoints. Even though I already have most of these joints, buying just to support the work.
