Love Out Loud

Love Out Loud

Jaci Velasquez has weathered stretches of personal and career turbulence since she emerged as a teenaged Christian music star in the ‘90s, and Love Out Loud finds her sorting through her life and music in a diffuse but mostly satisfying work. If her 2005 release Beauty Has Grace invited comparisons with Avril Lavigne, this album brings our Jaci’s affinity for Stevie Nicks. Her singing on “Nothing But Sky,” “Weightless,” and the title song has a sultry quality that recalls Nicks’ entrancing style. She takes a more straight-ahead approach on uplifting tracks like “It’s Not You, It’s Me” and “Into the Light Again” (a natural Christian radio hit). Velasquez balances these pop effusions with praise songs, infusing “Jesus (The Way)” and “My Alleluia (When Words Fail)” with spiritual passion. Though the Latin side of her sound is mostly downplayed, “Por Escrito” (a duet with husband Nic Gonzales) reaffirms her roots. The album’s boldest move is “Tango,” a smoldering track boasting sassy vocals and (by CCM standards) provocative lyrics.
