iTunes Review

NRBQ’s timeless roots-rock style got just a little brighter on 1983’s Grooves in Orbit, and for a moment it seemed the long-running group were finally aligned with the tastes of the mainstream. While the band had always been a little left of center, songs like “A Girl Like That,” “Some Kind of Blues," and “Rain at the Drive-In” fit easily alongside other pop hits of the era, falling somewhere between The Go-Go’s and Huey Lewis & The News. Meanwhile, bands like The Stray Cats helped create a more commercial niche for the kind of '50s-style rock that NRBQ had been plying for years. Certainly the cover of Johnny Cash’s “Get Rhythm” included here presages Michael J. Fox’s performance of Chuck Berry in Back from the Future. While NRBQ were finding a wider audience, they retained the idiosyncrasies that had always been their stock-in-trade. In the midst of an album of high-energy party songs, its most beautiful track is “How Can I Make You Love Me,” a gently forlorn love song that comes off like a Beatles melody coated in the windshield condensation of a drive-in date.

Caution: Genius At Work

Grooves In Orbit has many of the best-known and loved NRBQ tunes, including the regional hit "Rain At The Drive-In". "I Like That Girl" was featured on the Simpsons (Krusty's Daughter). "When Things Was Cheap" is a rare blast of social commentary from the Q, and presages the more recent "DUMMY" CD. All in all one of the best from this amazing group of American music omnivores. Often called "the world's greatest bar band," NRBQ are that rare group that's eclectic, stylistically innovative, and creatively ambitious while also sounding thoroughly unpretentious and accessible. At its best, NRBQ's music casually mixes up barrelhouse R&B, British Invasion pop, fourth-gear rockabilly, exploratory free jazz, and dozens of other flavors while giving it all a stomp-down rhythm that makes fans want to dance and expressing a sense of joy and easy good humor that comes straight from...
