Album Review

Ella Jenkins is an American treasure, who not only broke race and gender barriers, but also single-handedly developed and defined a whole new genre of children's music with her concerts, programs, and albums. This set, so full of her graceful joy and style, and with plenty of her trademark ukulele, is drawn from some of her recent albums and features 16 tracks that teach counting and the alphabet in multiple languages.

We ca’t stop singing her songs!

My kids have asked several times to listen to this album. At first I wondered if they'd like it because the songs are familiar nursery rhyme style songs and Ella does a lot of talking as she teaches the songs. But my kids were thoroughly captivated by Ella, her voice, her teaching and her songs.

I use these songs to help distract my 3 year old son if he starts to get mad about something. They work like a charm! We sing them as we're walking into a store, or when I'm buckling him up, pretty much any time he typically gets bored or frustrated with what we are doing (like holding hands in a parking lot!) I love having these simple songs to share with him to keep us in good spirits.

Ella's love of children and musical education in early childhood is powerfully felt while listening to this album. Her example of patience and repetition is the best teacher we could look to for how to engage our little ones in the art of learning and enjoying music.

From virtually the outset of her folksinging career, Ella Jenkins stood at the forefront of children's music, establishing herself as one of the few musicians in the genre whose charms extended beyond her young target audience into the realm of adults and educators. Born in St. Louis but raised in Chicago, Jenkins began singing professionally in 1956. Over the course of books, videos, and numerous albums, she educated children about everything from reading to geography to dance, and over time she...
