iTunes Editors’ Notes

13 Songs comprises Fugazi’s first two EPs: 1988's Fugazi and 1989's Margin Walker, recorded within six months of each other. Fugazi embodied a total rejection of classic rock pretension and excess and demanded an intense, immediate connection with its audience. For inspiration the band looked beyond its punk roots and adapted the furiously tough rhythms of American funk and Jamaican reggae. Among the results were “Waiting Room” and “Suggestion”: immense rock anthems that retained the explosive oratory of Ian MacKaye’s previous band, Minor Threat, while incorporating the elastic dynamics of African-American music. Fugazi’s songs stand alone within the realm of indie rock, although the band's self-fashioned form of post-punk music at times displays inadvertent similarities to The Minutemen (“Margin Walker”) and The Happy Mondays (“And the Same”). Metallic, impassioned, and danceable, 13 Songs brings together musical elements that were once thought to be mutually exclusive. These early releases show that in its own way, Fugazi was an archetypal guitar rock band.

Customer Reviews

A Life-Changing Band

Fugazi was the first punk band I saw live and I still love this album 15 years later. (Still have it on cassette, held together by masking tape!) Their DIY attitude and "no sell-out" ethos really impressed me. This album best captures their raw approach to making music that I loved that day at The Channel in Boston. I wonder though... Would Ian approve of selling the album for $11.99?

The Real Deal

There are certain times in your life that you know you are bearing witness to greatness. The 1st time I heard this Album at a basement party in high school, everything changed. After that night music was never the same for me. If someone admitts to not liking this album, they are not to be trusted.

Alternative defined

C'mon! You must give this 5 stars or you are not listening. I bought these EPs in the late 80's in high school and they still are great. They haven't aged a bit. In fact, they've made more sense to me as i've lived my life. These 2 EPs were put together to form this cd, 13 Songs. A must have for anyone! The music is aggressive and makes you want to do something more than just listen. Get it?

Biography

Formed: 1987 in Washington, D.C.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

If history is kind to Fugazi, their records won't be overshadowed by their reputation and methods of operation. Instead of being known for their community activism, five-dollar shows, ten-dollar CDs, and resistance to mainstream outlets, they will instead be known for their intelligent songwriting and undeniably proficient musicianship, which drew from their roots in Washington, D.C. hardcore, as well as post-punk and dub reggae....
